In humans, the thyroid gland is a tiny butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located at the anterior portion of the neck, wrapped around the trachea. In some cases, surgical resection of the thyroid gland, partially or totally, followed by radioactive iodine treatment is required to treat hyperthyroidism.
