What is a Myocardial Infarction?

Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, is the most prevalent cause of ICU admissions and mortality worldwide. It occurs when the blood flow to the myocardium is suddenly reduced or stopped due to constriction or occlusion of coronary arteries. As a result of acute myocardial oxygen deprivation, myocardial damage occurs. As an outcome, MI is a life-threatening illness that needs immediate medical attention to restore blood flow and avoid consequences such as heart failure, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrhythmia, and cardiac arrest.

High blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, diabetes, lack of exercise, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol use are risk factors for a heart attack.
