Insect stings can be life-threatening to certain people who have insect venom allergy. The immune system of the insect-allergic person overreacts to the insect venom to produce antibodies to trigger hypersensitivity to insect bites.

Acute response to the insect sting can be redness, itching, pain and warmth at the site of insect bite. However, allergic persons can quickly develop anaphylaxis, which is a serious condition leading to death. Therefore, preventing insect stings, timely diagnosis with right identification of insects and effective treatment to suppress immune response is crucial for the management of insect allergy

It is an acute allergic response to the bite of the stinging insect. Upon exposure to the insect venom or its components, the body's immune system reacts by producing IgE antibodies.
An allergic person to insect venom can develop acute and chronic reactions after an insect bite. Generally, the patient experiences localised swelling, warmth, itching and redness at the sting site. In severe conditions, the patient develops systemic reactions causing hives, inflammation of airways, mouth, tongue, breathing difficulty, and loss of consciousness, leading to anaphylaxis and death.
Prompt diagnosis with identification of causative insect and timely initiation of treatment can reduce the risk of developing severe reactions. Minor allergic responses can be treated with antihistamine tablets and corticosteroids. In case of a severe systemic reaction, parenteral administration of adrenalin, corticosteroids and specific antidote or immunotherapy is warranted with effective supportive care.
About 2% of the population react to insect bites with symptoms that extend beyond the bite site. People who are frequently stung are more likely to develop allergies. This includes people who work in bakeries, beekeepers, fruit sellers, farmers, and horticulturists. Besides, people with a history of allergy and old age people with breathing problems can develop insect allergies.
Stinging insect allergy samples are human and plasma samples isolated from consented donors diagnosed with insect venom allergy. The samples are well annotated and screened for specific insect antigen-antibody testing and available with a complete clinical profile.
