Respiratory Tract Infections at A Glance.
Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are airway diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungus that are extremely contagious. RTIs are often acute infections that can be mild or life-threatening depending on the causing pathogen and the severity of the infection. RTI spreads fast from infected to healthy people since it is a droplet infection. It is primarily transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces or inhalation of infectious droplets released by coughing, sneezing, talking, breathing, and other activities.
Respiratory infections are broadly classified into upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) or lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) based on the site of infection, symptoms, and severity. URTIs are typically mild to moderate illness such as the common cold, sinusitis, otitis media, and pharyngitis. LTRTI, on the other hand, can be mild in the early stages and quickly advance to life-threatening stage, if not treated adequately; it requires prompt hospitalization and the commencement of extensive antibiotic therapy to abate infection. Bacterial pneumonia, viral pneumonia, TB, influenza, bronchitis, and bronchiolitis are examples of common LRTI. LRTI is one of the top causes of death and ICU admissions worldwide. Also, the COVID 19 pandemic has been considered one of the world's most horrific respiratory illnesses.Against this background, there is an urgent call to strengthen biomedical research on respiratory infections to develop newer diagnostics and treatments to control the incidence. According to the estimates, RTIs result in around 180 million antibiotic prescriptions per year in the EU-27 member countries, and 7 million antibiotic prescriptions were written for acute bronchitis and cough in individuals aged between 16 to 64 in the United States in 2003.
In the present era, highly contagious respiratory tract infections such as bacterial/viral pneumonia, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), RSV, influenza and tuberculosis has imposed sever disease burden and healthcare cost on global population regardless of age and gender. These are more complicated lower respiratory tract infection caused by bacteria and virus. Also, the growing anti-microbial resistance made it challenging for tackle infections
